Chickens, Eagles, and Tides Rising

Chickens, Eagles, and Tides Rising

Hey Friends! I recently returned from emceeing Affiliate Summit East 2015, where I had the awesome opportunity to introduce the keynote speakers, Brian Littleton and Tim Ash. Brian said many incredible things during his keynote (you can watch the video, I’ve included it below!), but his comments about chickens and eagles really resonated with me. He implored each of us to keep an eye out for eagles, and to stay away from the chickens. The eagles, according to Brian, are the people in the industry who you trust, who you see going places, and who you naturally connect with. During the trip, I launched my latest project, Tides Rising. The concept comes from the quote “A rising tide lifts all boats” commonly attributed to John F. Kennedy. (It actually came from the New England Chamber of Commerce). It’s been used to mean many things over the years. I’m borrowing the phrase to represent a group of online marketers: social media managers, affiliate marketers, content marketers, bloggers, and more in which each person succeeds by helping others succeed.  In my years as an online marketer, I have filled each one of these roles at one time or another. I’ve attended different conferences and made friends in each of the different industries. I’m often astounded at what amazing people I’ve been able to get to know. A few years ago, I started noticing a pattern. I noticed that many of these individuals would help others (often me!) in any way they could. Rather than being secretive and keeping success to themselves, they would use their position of influence to lift others...

Getting Started with Affiliate Marketing

Welcome iBlog Magazine Readers! I’ve put together a little video of your very first steps to get started with earning money on your blog. All the links I mention in the video are below. (And guess what, they are affiliate links!!) This means, at no cost to you, I may earn a small commission at some point. I’ve also included a summary of the video below. If you have already done these items, go ahead and skip ahead. If not… I guess skip backwards? To be successful with this video, you need to already have a blog where you are blogging about things important to you. If you aren’t at that step yet, click here. Enjoy! Step One: Sign Ups   Links Prosperent.com ShareASale.com:  ShareASale is my favorite. They are a ridiculously helpful team. They respond to any beginner question with a smile. When I first started as an affiliate, the CEO, Brian Littleton, took time during his own conference to help me determine how to best monetize my blogs. If you end up talking to them, say Ashley Coombe (rhymes with room) sent you. AffiliateWindow.com:  Jeannine Crooks from Affiliate Window (who is also writing for the affiliate issue of iBlog Magazine) is one of the kindest people ever. She will hold your hand (not literally, that would be weird) through the process. If you get lost in the process, just ask for Jeannine. Social Media and Affiliate Marketing: Bridging the Gap

Social Media and Affiliate Marketing: Bridging the Gap

Hey Social Media friend! I’m working on a book about how Social Media Marketers can use Affiliate Marketing to earn income with their social media skills. I would love to get feedback from you on what kinds of questions or reservations you have about affiliate marketing to include in my book.  At the moment, I’m at Social Media Marketing World, so this would be the perfect time for me to hear your questions face to face. I will be at lunch, and during networking breaks I’ll hang out at the bar in the hotel. Please take a minute to come chat with me in either of those locations, or if you see me walking by in the hall, grab me and let me know what you’d like to see answered in the book! I included ALL my looks, since my hair might end up straight, curly, up or down today. Apparently I look different every time. Just in case I show up with a mud mask or fish lips, you’ll still know how to find me. And you never know when I might be wearing a wig. Give Me a Free Year or I Will Expose All Your Weaknesses!

Give Me a Free Year or I Will Expose All Your Weaknesses!

In Internet Marketing, I often get asked if people can try my product or service for free before committing. The first time someone asked and I said no, I had just finished speaking at a conference.  She stood up and said “You know what, I didn’t even learn anything from you anyway.” At the time, that wasn’t funny. Once I got the feedback and saw how many people loved the talk, it became funny. The second person that asked (minutes later) combined her request with an explanation about how she didn’t have the fee right now, but she would return the favor by consistently sharing information about our company in forums and facebook groups. She showed me some of the groups she was a member of where she would be evangelizing. I upgraded her account and gave her a free account immediately. If you’re asking for something free, think of your approach. Do it right, and it might just work!  Just for fun, I have to share one of my favorite emails requesting product for free. The spelling is clearly (I hope) not my own: I am going to say mean things about you. Or you give me a free year! We are using (redacted) for severeal months and we (redacted). Unfortenrly yor program caused to spend more time and energy than if we not used the program. You cant know if you dont try. Its too exepencive to pay program that is developing. ABC is the Emcee for ASE!

ABC is the Emcee for ASE!

As a small child, when asked what she wanted to do when she grew up, Ashley B Coombe would respond matter of factly, “I want to be the emcee at Affiliate Summit.” Her other standard answer included something about a combination clown, fireman, teacher doctor, but emceeing was her true dream.   Despite the fact that no one knew what the internet was yet, much less Affiliate Marketing, no one believed this to be odd, because it simply fit with Ashley’s overactive imagination. She did, after all, genuinely believe E.T. was her brother, so why wouldn’t she also want to emcee something that didn’t actually exist?   Today, Ashley’s dreams have come true. She will be the emcee for ASE15. Ashley B Coombe is a speaker, writer and educator about social media for businesses and affiliate marketing for bloggers. She is the Marketing Director at an affiliate tools provider, Prosperent, and the head of marketing for the Content Marketing Platform, Shareist. She’s written for several blogs, including Forbes.com and the Shark Tank Blog, and has recently become a published author by finally completing her first book, “30 Tools, Tips & Tricks to Save You Time on Social Media and Blogging”.   – AshleyBCoombe – Affiliate Blogging Coach | Social Media for Small Businesses 30 Tips, Trick & Tools to Save You Time on Social Media and Blogging. 56 Slides for an 18 Minute Presentation? I Got This.

56 Slides for an 18 Minute Presentation? I Got This.

Let me give you a little advice. If you ever are given 18 minutes to do a presentation, putting 56 slides in your presentation is maybe not the best idea. Unfortunately, I was not there to give myself that advice before my recent Affiliate Summit West 2015 talk.    When I originally proposed the session title, I assumed I’d have an hour to give the talk. I titled it “30 Tools, Tips & Tricks to Save You Time on Social Media and Blogging.” I even bravely declared it an advanced topic.  Shawn Collins, the conference founder, assured me that I could change the title once I discovered I only had 18 minutes, so I tried. I thought about only covering one tool, or maybe four. But, as usual, I had so much I wanted to say. I decided to that I could still cover the same amount of material and just talk really really fast.    Remember those commercials about not having very many minutes on your cell phone plan? Family members would call each other, set a recording device, and then talk reallyreallyreally fast. They’d hang up, and listen to the actual message in slow motion on the recorder.    That’s kind of what I pictured my presentation would be like. I knew the slides and video would be available to the attendees, so I just figured I’d rush through it and get all the information out there, and they could take the time to absorb later.    As it turns out, the 18 minutes were one of the best things that could have happened. I’ve had so many...
Lives Have Been Changed

Lives Have Been Changed

***Update to this story*** Friends, thank you. Because of you, we were able to raise $4500. Unbelievable. The kindness that people showed, from complete strangers, to people I’ve met one or two times, to good friends- you have amazed me. My life, not to mention the lives of my sister and her family have been forever changed by your generosity. Never again will I let a request for help for an individual pass me by. I now know how deeply it affects the receiver.   My husband and I decided that with that much help, we could finance the remainder of the car. We had a wonderful night purchasing it, and the individual selling it to us brought the bow out and let us take pictures with it before we left. Last week I drove the car out to my sister’s house in Kansas. She came outside and said “Wow, you guys got a new car, it’s beautiful!” and I told her it was for her. She was just silent. No tears, no screaming… She asked me how we could possibly do that. I told her that I had written a blog and shared her story and people had donated money to help her family. She went from being shocked to amazed to embarrassed to grateful and back again. She went in the house, got her husband, and while my mom and I watched the kids, they drove around. They didn’t come back for half and hour. She said over and over that it was the nicest car they’ve ever owned, and when they returned I watched as she pushed...
